Denim Clothing for Every Part of Your Week
Some weeks call for an outfit you can throw on for uni, work, dinner plans and whatever lands in between. Our Denim Edit makes that easier with jeans, skirts, shorts, dresses, jackets and shirts designed to mix back with the rest of your wardrobe.
Each piece is designed in-house by our Australian team, with women's denim clothing that works across warmer days and cooler layers. Shop the range online or check your nearest store to see what is available in person.
What clothes count as denim?
Denim is a cotton twill woven with an indigo-dyed warp and an undyed weft. That construction gives denim its familiar fade, with colour wearing lighter on the surface while the reverse stays pale. Women’s denim jackets, jeans, skirts, shorts, dresses, shirts and overalls all count as denim clothing.
Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented riveted work trousers in 1873. By the time our first Melbourne store opened in 1948, denim was already part of everyday wardrobes, and it has stayed in our range ever since.
What are the different types of denim fabric?
Three fabric groups cover most denim in our range. Rigid denim is 100% cotton, holds its shape and softens with wear. Stretch denim blends cotton with a small amount of elastane, polyester or viscose, so it gives with movement and recovers. Lighter weight denim uses a thinner weave that feels cooler in summer.
Most of our jeans and denim pieces use 100% cotton, with blends added where extra movement makes sense. We source cotton through Better Cotton and choose fabric based on how each piece is meant to fit and move.
Every denim style in Sportsgirl's range
Bottoms, dresses and layers make up our denim range, with shape doing most of the work when you pick a piece. Start with the leg, rise or hem you want, then choose your wash or print.
1. Denim pants and jeans include culotte, wide-leg jean, barrel jean, straight-leg jeans, patch pocket, high-rise and mid-rise options. Cropped jeans sit within our culotte cuts.
2. Denim skirts span mini and midi skirts, including button-down and A-line shapes, with the denim midi skirt adding extra length.
3. Denim short options include high-rise, longline, jogger and patch pocket cuts.
4. Denim dresses come in mini and midi lengths for an easy one-piece outfit.
5. Denim jackets and denim shirt styles add another light layer.
Look for bleach denim, classic blue, vintage blue, washed indigo, deep indigo, marine, chocolate, white, pink, floral, paisley and animal prints.
How should denim fit?
High-rise denim sits at the natural waist, while mid-rise denim sits below it for a more relaxed cut. A high rise wide leg jean gives you extra length through the leg, while looser silhouettes shift the volume lower down. For denim jackets, check the shoulder first and leave enough room for a knit underneath.
If you sit between sizes, use the cut as your cue. Our sizes run 3XS to XXL. An XXS fitted culotte will sit closer than the same size in a barrel or wide leg. Use our fit guide to compare measurements before choosing your bottoms.
How can I wear women's denim jeans in all seasons?
Pure cotton denim breathes through warmer weather and works under knitwear once the temperature drops. That gives women's denim jeans plenty of mileage across the Australian year, since lighter denim suits hotter days while heavier cuts work well with layers.
1. Spring pairs straight-leg jeans with a tee, light knit or chambray shirt and sneakers.
2. Summer works with denim shorts or a mini skirt, singlet and sandals.
3. Autumn suits barrel jeans with a knit, blouse or boots as the weather cools.
4. Winter brings in a denim midi skirt over tights, or a denim jacket layered under a coat.
For nights out, try a denim mini dress or dark wash wide leg with heels. Double denim works best when the washes sit close together, like a pale wash jacket over mid-blue jeans. Our guide to wearing denim in the heat has more ideas for warmer days.
How do you wash denim so it keeps its shape?
Wash denim less often to help it hold its shape. Once it needs a clean, turn it inside out, use a cold gentle cycle, then hang it to dry away from direct sun. Rigid 100% cotton can feel firmer after washing and soften again with wear, while stretch blends rely on their fibres to recover.
Skip the dryer unless the care label says otherwise, since heat can cause shrinkage. Worn denim you no longer use can go through our UPPAREL partnership for garment recycling.
