5 Minutes with Whitney

We fell in love with Whitney when we first saw her grace our TV screens on 'The Hills' and 'The City'. Not only winning us over with her personality and nice girl attitude, we have since become smitten with just how talented she is as a designer.

Whitney instinctively knows the kind of fun, light hearted fashion we love best at Sportsgirl. She describes her aesthetic as Cali-casual-meets-NYC-edge, but for Australian style enthusiasts, her pieces are a perfect fit.

We caught up with Whitney at her Australian Fashion Week launch to find out about her fashion philosophy, style evolution, and get inside what she’s learned from life on film.

Sportsgirl: How have you been finding the transition back to life off-camera?

Whitney: I've absolutely loved it! It's so refreshing to not constantly have a filter on what I say, and also not be so concerned with how I look.

Sportsgirl: Can you share one of your most memorable teenage fashion experiences with us?

Whitney: Emulating Marilyn Monroe for a semi-formal dance. I wore a vintage white gathered dress, red lips, and a retro wavy hair do.

Sportsgirl: When do you think you really nailed ‘your’ style? How did you know?

Whitney: I still don't know that I've necessarily nailed my style. I feel that it is ever changing. I am always striving to not only reinvent myself but my design skill as well.

Sportsgirl: What, to you, is the essence of truly great personal style?

Whitney: Originality and a willingness to defy trends.

Sportsgirl: What did you want to be when you grew up?

Whitney: Always a fashion designer.

Whitney: Jess Hart, Cate Blanchett and Rose Byrne.

Sportsgirl: Must buys for Spring 2012?

Whitney: Printed trousers and jeans, fun socks to wear with heels, over-sized boxy tuxedo jackets and lots of neon accessories.

Whitney: Be a patient listener. Only say what you would say to their face. Not everyone has to be your best friend -- you can have different friends for different reasons.
