Romance Was Born in a State Library
I couldn't have asked for a more uplifting and wondrous start to a fashion week as we were ushered into the Mitchell Library at Sydney’s State Library where the Romance was Born show took place yesterday on a lazy meandering Sunday afternoon as a pre-amble to the week ahead.
Romance was Born aka duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales take the word ‘show’ seriously and this was no different, as an orchestra was poised to soundtrack the show and the models started marching down the middle of the room, along the tiered levels of floor-to-ceiling bookcases, in a show inspired by The Never Ending Story and very clearly the 1920s.
Beware. Don’t mention the word ‘flapper’, despite the overt references to the decade. There was a level of opulence through the art deco inspired prints painted with the fantasy dreamscapes that RWB are known for, that really presented a heightened interpretation of the decade that makes you not want to throw out 1920's costume clichéd comparisons.
What begun with elegant meets fantastical ensembles that were based around drop-waisted skirts, palazzo trousers and bathing suits only flirted with the decade without being overly referential. Combined with RWB’s killer use of prints, these are the sort of clothes which need to be worn whilst lying on a digi-print clad chaise lounge with Noel Coward mixed with Metronomy playing in the background.
RWB then went into further magical territory to a land called Fantasia, which was inspired by the dual nature of the Empress’ magical talisman - AURYN where serpents entertwine.
I’m just going to take that story at face value because as always you somehow get transported into RWB’s world by the end of the show because you’re utterly slayed by their vision…
The Australian Youth Choir chimed in towards the end too to suit the grandeur of the show…
The final line-up at the back of the library will forever be imprinted in my mind…
And yes, I had to get a shot of Cate Blanchett who has been a longtime supporter of the brand and was wearing demure Givenchy for the occasion…
One of RWB’s Fantasia creations escaped the library to catch the last rays of dusk…
