Artwork Name: Empowered

Tell us about your personal style of artwork and where you get your inspiration from:

I would consider my style to be maximalist, colourful and intricate. My other passion is graphic design so I love a pop art or 2 dimensional vibe. I get inspired by 'Community'. The stories I tell through my art are a reflection of various experiences myself, and many other mob have been through. I am also heavily inspired by the strong females I have surrounded myself with since starting this painting journey. I now have a strong support system of other First Nations Artists that encourage and support my learning and growth, and that makes my creativity shine.

Where did the inspiration behind this piece of artwork come from?:

The inspiration for Empowered came from my belief that we are constantly reinventing ourselves. I am always trying to improve in every aspect of my life: my self love, my mental and physical wellbeing. Taking the leap to make changes in our lives may sometimes be difficult, but as a result, we become our best selves, and I think that progress not only empowers others to do the same, but empowers us to keep evolving.

Why did you name your artwork Empowered?:

I named this artwork Empowered as I felt the bright pinks provided an intense femininity. The symbol for 'person' reiterated on a bigger scale shows how the more empowered we are to make change, the bigger and better we become.

What was your favourite part about collaborating with Mali, headspace and the other artists on this project?:

Now I have a group of people who know my story and who I can learn from and the team and other artists were so incredibly supportive. Because of them listening and getting to know my unique story, I am walking away from this project with more confidence as an emerging First Nations artist.

How do you wish to create a better future for yourself and others?:

By continuing to embrace my heritage and encouraging other people who have been disconnected from their mob to keep going, to show them that the more you become involved, the more connected to your ancestors you are. Expressing my feelings through art is one of the most healing experiences I have ever had.
