    Hello ladies,

My year 10 formal is coming up in November. I know it's ages away but I want to have at least and IDEA of what I want my dress to look like. So I would love to know if any of you awesome people know where I can get a formal dress that isn't super expensive or just plain fugly :)
I think I want a dress that comes just above the knee and is a little bit puffy, then goes tight around the waist with a sligthy round neckline, medium straps ad definately with a low back.
I want the fabric to be kind of shiny (you know the kind?) and either red, emerald or bluey/ purple.
Does that sound good? Or would you suggest something else?

Any ideas where I can get a dress kind of like that?

Or even just an awesome store with unique but gorgeous dresses?

    I'M SO EXCITED!!! GAAAH!!! :D

    Write back. x

Oh how i wish i was back at school....three mistakes i made with my school formal outfits were:
    1) Getting my makeup/ hair done, coming out looking like a transvestite haha
    2) Wearing the same dress as two other girls
    3) Wearing very out there dresses, looking back now i wish i wore something more timesless and simple.

Yeah maybe David Jones or Forever New. But there is nothing better than a stunning vintage dress, they are timeless, stunning and no-one else will be wearing the same thing. Nothing worse than a group of girls that look the same.
Im sure you will beautiful, hope you have lots of fun. Keep us posted x

Hi, dance_like_me. I had my Year 10 formal in Dec.last year and was certainly a great experience to remember.
It's always good to go out having an idea of what you want to get,you may or may not get exactly what you originally thought of but in the end it's either very similar or even better.
Definitely check out your local Formal Wear stores,if too expensive. Forever New always has greats Formal wear, I nearly got everything from there jewelry, dress, clutch. Myer always have a great collection of Formal wear and some of which are not too expensive, it just depends on your budget. If you want a plainer dress but with a bold colour Dotti is the place and you can always change the look of the dress by wearing accessories to suit your ideas etc. But judging from your description,I think you might be wanting something that say, has something a bit more going for it. Of course there is always Sportsgirl! they're great for something a little bit vintage but still fashion forward and gorgeous.
If chain stores is not your thing, if you live near a major city like Melb or Syd there are always cute little boutiques where you can pick up something a bit quirky and unique but still glamours.
    * Just a tip, make sure (though its up to you) you get a dress that you know you'll be able to wear again, just so you don't get something that will end up sitting in your wardrobe for the next 10 years collecting dust or something!
    * Also don't buy everything in one hit,you may end up deciding that you made a really bad decsion and it can be hard to be in that situation when returning etc.
    * Have a plan,a colour scheme, it might help to bring something you have bought already for it to the next time you go shopping or maybe a photo that way you'll definitely know that.."the shoes will go, or the necklace will go".
    Have fun!

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what you want already! I got my formal dresses from boutiques, and always looked different from everyone else (this was really important to me in high school, whereas I know some just like to fit in). I think a cocktail length dress is much better than full length for increasing your chances of wearing it again, but don't spend a ridiculous amount of money, you will still have so much fun regardless of how much you spend!
