Unfortunately reality tv so often just isn't reality! Lauren Conrad's 'job' doesn't exist. If you work in fashion, you have to do it for the love of the art or you will get disillusioned so quickly - and let's face it, unless you are on a first-name basis with the Lagerfelds and Wintours of this world, there's no money in fashion. I heard that Kelly Cutrone's new show 'Kell on Earth' portrays a more accurate picture of the industry (she works in PR). Perhaps try watching that? Good luck :)

Unfortunately being Australian is a major hindrance to getting into a fashion career :-( Fashion degrees and internships like Lauren's are not very common.
Our industry is just so small compared to other countries. Trying to go overseas to study and intern would be the best move if you are serious but you would need a lot of funds behind you. Hence the successful fashion people are often from really wealthy 'known' families like the Holt sisters.
Having said that, some people are just made to work in those kinds of jobs with the right personality, etc and if you know that's really what you want to do you won't stop until you get it!

Good point girl-interrupted! Like most other things, we're a smaller/ younger country with less opportunities going around and less of an established industry when compared to Europe and the US. But on the other side of things that also means there's less competition - and it's easier to stand out if you have passion and talent when you're first getting started!!

I'm a FT fashion writer/ editor - and there are amazing stylists/ editors/ photographers/ designers etc out there in Oz working on inspiring stuff. So it exists - yeah you have to work hard, but I think that's true no matter where in the world you live, just in different ways!

I don't believe that entirely that we might have "less access" to getting a job in the fashion industry. There are so many Australian designers, some that are really well known and some that are not so well known all of these designers have to go and study somewhere to actually get to where they want to be and that goes for PR,Styling,Editoring,Events etc. Although some of our resources to helping us get a job may be "lacking", I think we just need to think about if we really want to get into this industry, how we can do it/where to start etc and work out a plan. In the end if we are really devoted to the area of the career, theres always travelling if you really want to make it work. The opportunites in some cases are endless it just depends on how you want to study your way through. Go into it having a positive mind set, being negative wont get you anywhere and expect the unexpected!
