Words have always been enticing to me, as a child I loved to be read to by my grandma. She was, in fact, the person who introduced me to the wonders of Harry Potter! She would lie on the bed while I lay with my head on her stomach and read chapters at a time of the Harry Potter series. Her voice sliding from the higher, smart and business like voice of Hermione to the deep, slick and brooding voice of Snape. She would stop every 10 minutes or so to make sure I knew what was happening and answer my questions, such as “what’s a hippogriff?” and “Are witches and wizards real?”
After a while we moved onto other books, and the Harry Potter series was forgotten, but only for a short while. I started reading them again when I was around 8. They were magical to me, never before read. Sure, I had read other books on witches and wizards, but this...this was amazing.
Soon after, the first movie was released ‘Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone’. It was good. It satisfied me as a good bowl of soup satisfies a hungry traveller. Now when I read the books, I saw the faces of Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. I could never imagine them as another person. This suits me fine though.
As I grew up the stories changed their meaning for me. Instead of the characters simply being the witch and wizard main characters, Daniel Radcliff became hot (only for a while? ) and Emma Watson became my fashion and general idol. I absolutely HAD to be there for a premier with all my girl and guy friends in tow instead of just popping along to the cinema with my mum days after the hub bub had gone down, as I used to.
My point is, you can so clearly see how much you have ‘grown up’ when you put it next to a lifetime love. And I am confused whether it’s good or not. Do you (as I do) wish that you had retained a bit more of your careless youth than you have now? What do you think makes you grow up faster? And do you agree that you can make a timeline of your maturing rate beside a long loved series, whether it is a movie, book or maybe even music series?
Write in your thoughts, x
