    hiya guys,
recently one of my friends went on the lemon detox which means all they have is is drink of water and lemon and maple syrup and cayenne pepper for one week. She is not fat or anything and im sort of worried. Today at school people asked if she were tired and she said she felt good. Some of my other friends were saying they were going to try it and i dont know much abiut this stuff but i feel worried. It seems everyone lately thinks their fat and have to work out and not eat carbs and crap and i dont know, it makes me concerned. I have to admit i am very cautious not to eat junk food but i have a balanced diet and all...should i be worried that my skinny friends are considering eating nothing for a week? Is this lemon detox actually a good thing? Is it HEALTHY to do this to yourself?

The lemon detox diet is a horrible diet- as are 99.99% of diets.
Its almost starvation, but the detox drink contains just enough to keep you going. The weight drops off but that's not a good thing. Your friend will gain back any weight she has lost when she stops the diet, plus extra. When you deprive your body of nutrients for such a long time, as soon as you eat again the body grabs onto this food, and stores it as extra fat to use as a reserve for the next time the body is deprived. The result of which will probably have a big impact on your friend both mentally and physically.

As a friend, I'd be very worried that your friend is dieting particularly because as you said, she is not overweight. It's important that such behaviour does not develop into an eating disorder. It might be worth talking to your school counsellor or a friendly teacher for advice.

Detoxing can actually be quite damaging to your health, people have all sorts of weird reactions to it.
And there is also no medical evidence that it makes any difference to your 'insides'. Bodies don't need to be detoxed as they do it themselves 24 hours a day! The human body is a pretty amazing machine and we shouldn't mess with it!

As with ALL crash diets, she'll gain it back, and then move onto more extreme ways to lose weight, slowly developing an ED. Happens to the very best of people. I'd try to convince her of a healthier way to lose weight ('Come join a swim team with me' or something like that) and if that fails, provide her with information about WHY Lemon/cayenne pepper doesn't work (Beyonce was on it, and she's back to where she started size wise) and why any other detox/crash diets wont work. Failing that, get a teacher/parent/counselor to step in. She may be pissed for a bit, but she'll tank you in the long run if you've stopped the Eating disorder express.

But also be aware that most girls 'experiment' with ways to lose weight, get bored of it, and settle into something they're comfortable with. I would worry more if this carried on longer than a few days... I mean only the truly obsessed would be able to handle that ugly disgusting concoction of a drink anyway.

It takes away muscle not fat...and it takes longer for muscle to develop that fat...so your basically making yourself into a fat making machine :S
My Auntie went on it a while ago (she was definately not fat, but we couldn't change her mind) and she looked terrible. All pale and drawn...not nice.
The best diet is eating good full balanced meals regularly and working out daily.
Except you all knew that... :)

I tried this (stupidly). I was already a quite thin and I lost a bit of weight, but only temporarily because the weight came back on the following week. (Not that I needed to lose weight - I was just being an idiot). The worst part is that my cholesterol levels went up afterwards. My doctor said it was a result of the detox and that I should never do anything that stupid again. Be careful, ladies - the lemon detox diet is DANGEROUS! It won't make you lose fat, it will only increase the level of unhealthy fat in your body, because your metabolism will freak out and start storing EVERYTHING like crazy, thinking that it is in the middle of a famine. The body doesn't need to detox. It's designed to eliminate waste products (that's why we go to the bathroom).

So whats the best way to lose weight? cause the only way ive seen that people achieve being skinny is when they go anorexic which was my friend. and she is loving life now. although she had a chance of dying from it.
i only wish to do the same; as i only wanna be like everyone else. so apart from starving yourself how exactly is the best way to lose weight?
