Grammar, words, solecisms

I like words. I like the way they paint the empty canvas of a blank sheet of paper. I like taking nothing and making it something, and the frisson of joy that follows that thing's completion. I like the scratch of the calligraphy nib, heralding the story that leaps from pen to page.

I don't like solecism. Or typing. Or texting. Or lol. Or unnecessary apostrophes.

Language is the amalgamation of culture, art and efficiency, an inevitable, beautiful collision that refuses to remain stagnant. Here's to words.

I agree with you, but I'm never so strict about these sorts of things. There are grammatical errors people make all the time that really irritate me, but at the same time I'm sure I make plenty myself, I can't pretend to be perfect!

I think grammer and spelling is outdated. As long as you get your point across there should be no need for the dissection of writing. Beauty and order can be left for the other parts of my life. Words are for communication.

Were you trying to be ironic? :)

Hmmm, I'm not too fussed by grammar- we're all guilty of a slip-up here and there- but I'm pretty fussy when it comes to spelling. To me, an email, letter or anything else smattered with spelling and punctuation errors is just as bad as a sloppy outfit and hairdo at a fancy dress party- demonstrative of a lack of respect for the recipient/host.

And I think word are pretty much the most superb things ever.

At my work, I regularly receive resumes from people seeking employment. The best way to get your resume in the bin is to have the smallest grammatical or spelling error; I can guarantee you that.

sadly no. I’m all for full stops and commas but I hated in high school the emphasis English teachers in particular would put on grammar. Especially when they would try to enforce rules of grammar that I’d never heard of or noticed in any type of written work. English as a subject didn’t come easily to me and I hated feeling bad about not being good at it. So I think I have a bit of an aversion to it because of this. I will try my best grammar wise for important or officially things but I prefer the relaxed conversation of emails and texts because I feel I won’t be judged if I make mistakes.

I think it more important than just high school. It is terrible how so many young people have no idea about spelling and grammar because of text/internet language. Apparently some kids actually hand in essays with abbreviations and acronyms, as if they don't even know the real words exist! Imagine when these are the adults of our society!
