Love or hate?
I can't stand to be in their stores myself; while I do like the simple cuts and colours, unisex range, good-quality fabrics and the general idea of the company, their staff are so pretentious it makes me want to cry and I shudder every time I hear a story about their founder Dov Charney and his antics. Not to mention their advertisements... I mean, I don't need nipples to sell a hoodie to me, thankyou. Surely AA customers are a little more fashion-forward and discerning than that. Or are they?
American Apparel really distresses me in that the signature AA cuts and colours are becoming the new ubiquitous 'brand name' (without actually having a logo on them). Meanwhile, other chains are ripping off the simplicty of the styles in an effort to cash in on this. I'm all about basics, but not when they have any relation to AA.
Am I being too harsh, or do other people feel like this about American Apparel?

I don't think you're being too harsh, I don't like their ads and haven't bought from them for this reason. Also, when those 14 models were hidden away was very scary.

No Stephanie you are not too harsh! You are so right! I was so excited for the American apparel store to open here after shopping there in Canada but what a disappointment! I feel like they don't even have the same stock here?! The store layout is confusing and boring, I didn't see the staff so I can't comment, but the price tag ....horendous! For what's essentially a 'basic' you are definitely better off buying the knock-off version at one of the el-cheapo stores!

I've got to agree about the advertising. When I first looked at their online store I was like why is nearly every item sexualised? It's just a clothes shop - not ****!
I was keen on their convertible dress but all of their items are just too expensive for what they are. As melbstyle mentioned, they're just basics! I wonder how well they are doing in the US?

You're so right about the staff. Their service is the worst I've ever encountered.

Haven't been to an AA store in Aus, but the staff are definately like that in London. Twats, basically. Why do people like that always think they're so much better than their customers?

I haven't had any quality issues with the few AA items I do have - actually they're pretty decent. They ought to be, since they're made in the USA by well-paid and trained people.

I think they should be better than what they are. Given some stretch fabric & an overlocker I think I could make that stuff, & a seamstress, I am not. Their designs are kind of like the beginner's ones in my "Sewing for Dummies" book!
