Winter layering help

Hey girlies,
I'm having trouble with layering. I adore the look of tights, wtih leg warmers and wedge boots. I really want to start layering for winter, just like the sportsgirl mannequins wear :) haha I just never seem to be able to do it right. What should I wear under a duffle coat and tights? Also I love the sportsgirl hoisery clothing items but again i dont know what or how to wear them?
