My bag has items totalling $

We collaborated with some amazing local artists to create our new season store windows. Meet Melbourne-based abstract painter Noël - whose work you can check out on our homepage right now - and take a look at the Brunswick studio space she works from.
SG: Hi Noël! How are you? Tell us a little about yourself.
NS: Hi Sportsgirl! I'm Noël - pronounced "Noelle" - my parents just took the spelling off a Christmas card! I live in Melbourne and love it. My favourite hobbies are going to the movies, playing futsal, cooking dumplings and trying to grow a herb garden in the shade - argh, frustrating!
SG: We're really intrigued by your artwork. Can you explain it to us?
NS: My paintings are usually large, abstract and colourful and I often pour the paint, rather than apply it with a brush. Sometimes I work on canvas, sometimes directly on the wall. I've also made sculptural works and I enjoy drawing. When I was in art school I had a desire to 'free the paint' - to let paint move off of the canvas and be more powerful and the concept has grown and developed since then.

SG: What inspires you?
NS: I grew up in Canberra and went to art school there. I think I was really affected by all the great American Abstract expressionist paintings and other masterpieces at the National Gallery of Australia. It's really important for artists to see real paintings in the flesh rather than just rely on seeing reproductions in books or online. I've travelled to the USA, Japan and Europe quite a bit and the art that I've seen has really enriched me.
SG: How does creating art make you feel?
NS: I feel lucky to be able to spend so much time doing what I love. Making art feels like the most 'right' thing to do for me. It's challenging in lots of ways but it's also so much fun. It's gratifying to think that the things that I create would never exist if I hadn't made them - nobody in the entire history of humankind in the past or future can make my paintings - only me!

SG: You have quite an awesome studio space.
NS: Thank you! I share this warehouse space with five other artists in Brunswick. At lunchtimes we sit out the front and watch the factory workers on their forklifts, admire the new graffiti on the walls and talk about politics. I have a kettle and a comfy chair and music is my constant companion. When I'm not listening to Triple R (a local independent radio station) I'm playing PJ Harvey, Eurythmics, Boards of Canada, Avalanches, Diplo, or anything I can sing along to.

Be sure to check out Noël's artworks currently gracing our website homepage and our store windows nationwide. You can also get to know some of the other amazing artists we worked with here.
