Sportsgirl Guest Blogger Susie Bubble brings you her wrap up of the first day at RAFW - including Zimmermann, Arnsdorf and Kirrily Johnston.
Into the Country, Let there be Light and Out by the Sea
I know it's a bit predictable to say that the amount of sunshine in Australia really affects the aesthetic mentality of designers here, but judging by the some of the stellar collections we saw on the official first day of RAFW, I suddenly felt uplifted and started to yearn for arid hot days, which are a rarity for a Brit like me, but are of course a far more frequent occurrence here (if Sydneyites are complaining how cold it is right now in 21 degree weather, I'd like to see how they'd fare in UK's minus 10 winters).
Zimmemann started proceedings with a collection that really exploited the qualities of white broderie anglaise into something that was far from innocent and girlish. Instead with twice thigh-high splits in long flowing skirts, trademark sexy cut-out swimsuits and sharp tailoring worked into pelmets at the hips and neat nehru collars, the feminine and traditional qualities of materials like broderie anglaise, patchwork muslin and watercolour florals are subverted. I want to be rolling around in a summery poppy field making a fake perfume advert wearing these clothes… no, literally… I'll call it Eau de Bubble?!
Jade Sarita of Arnsdorf stripped it back and erstwhile took her aesthetic to a more ethereal level and it seemed like she was inspired by those sun drenched days, when the sky is so bright you can't look directly at it. The palette went from lilac to mint green to white to hot pink and finally to a flurry of pale sunset colours, seen in a sarong-esque dress. There was something quite evocative about the delicately draped dresses, jumpsuits and loose summer jackets and when paired with the equally restrained accessories of strappy flat sandals, compact suede handbags and gold accented belts, Jade set a seductively languid tone for S/S 12.
Kirrily Johnston’s show took the RAFW fashion circus to Iceberg’s, the famed restaurant in Bondi, Sydney where against the crashing waves, a show of sun-burnished bronze tones was presented. Rose-gold was used in abundance in the jewellery which was echoed in the clothes with leather pocketed dresses being a strong highlight.
