Continuing our support of the bright young things of fashion, this year we’ve teamed up with Frankie magazine to support the LMFF Metamorphosis Student Showcase. We caught up with the amazingly talented finalists as they get set to hit the catwalk.
21-year-old Sydneysider and University of Technology student Olivia Jung brings her unique sense of femininity to her collection for LMFF, taking her muse Cleopatra well and truly into the 21st Century.
Sportsgirl: Hey Olivia! Can you tell Sportsgirls a little bit about yourself?
There is nothing else I would like to do on this earth. I love to be inspired, envision, experiment, create, and share the love!
SG: How would you describe your collection for the Metamorphosis Student Showcase?
My collection “CLEOSPECTRA” is an interpretation of a contemporary femme fatale; a futuristic capture of the historic Cleopatra. I’ve played with elements such as 3D-structured beading, cut-outs, sheer panels, and engineered draping of pleats.
SG: How would you describe your style?
Strong. Statement. Sexy. Futuristic surface embellishment.
SG: Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind your pieces?
I was inspired by the idea of creating garments that emit a strong, sharp, warrior-like, glamourous persona: ancient Egyptian nuances inspired strong colours and mood. Following the concept of a warrior-like ‘untouchable’ demeanour, I’ve challenged the idea of creating 3D embellishment, something sharp and off the body- like armour.
SG: When did the lightbulb go off in your head?
4am, alone in the studio, under extreme pressure, looking over a table full of unfinished failed experiments!
SG: Who, or waht, is your biggest inspiration?
People: Real figures from the past, present and future. Imagined figures from the past, present and future.
SG: Where to from here?
I would like to be somewhere where I can be constantly and abundantly be inspired and grow as a designer. The fact is, anything is possible.
