Continuing our support of the bright young things of fashion, this year we’ve teamed up with Frankie magazine to support the LMFF Metamorphosis Student Showcase. We caught up with the amazingly talented finalists as they get set to hit the catwalk.

With a palette of pretty pastels and dove gray, Melbourne designer Laura De Vries has created a sweet collection of pieces for the Metamorphosis Showcase. We're a little bit in love with her wondrous mix of underwear-as-outerwear and unique finishing touches, and think the crowd will be too after checking out the RMIT grad's work on the runway!

SPORTSGIRL: HI LAURA! CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?

LAURA DE VRIES: Growing up in the coastal town of Ocean Grove in Victoria, I new from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in fashion design. After finishing school I began my fashion studies and eventually moved to Melbourne to complete my Bachelor of Design (Fashion) at RMIT University.

SG: AND YOUR COLLECTION FOR THE LMFF METAMORPHOSIS STUDENT SHOWCASE?

LDV: This collection has been built around the concept of displaying on the outside, details most often contained on the inside. Stemming from the idea of using underwear as a form of outerwear, and also displaying finishing techniques found on the inside of garments, the idea of exposing contained detailing was then enhanced by exploring the detailing of modern interior architecture designs.

SG: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SHOWING AT THE LMFF?

LDV: I feel very fortunate to have been chosen to show at LMFF. It makes all the work that has gone into my graduate collection feel more worthwhile.

SG: WHERE TO FROM HERE?

LDV: Hopefully to gain a job as a designer working for someone else and then eventually develop my own label and work for myself!
