Sportsgirl sat down with Melbourne blogger Kat George to get the story behind her one-off window installation at our Chadstone store.
Sportsgirl: Hey Kat – can you tell Sportsgirls a little bit about yourself?
Kat George: I’m a recent law graduate with an unhealthy shoe obsession. I laugh at my own jokes, I drop EVERYTHING, and one day I hope that I’ll write something so brilliant I’ll pick up a movie option and never have to work a nine to five suit job again.
SG: We heart your blog – always love checking out your outfit combos! Why did you start blogging?
KG: Thanks! I started blogging when I first moved to London in 2007. I was on a break from uni and living in a mouse infested shoebox with my boyfriend at the time who was working ridiculous hours. It was a cold, hard city to be in without my family and friends and I felt cramped and lonely. I needed something positive to motivate myself and focus my energy on; I’d always wanted to be a writer and my love of fashion goes without saying, so it made sense to combine the two. Everything else just fell into place after that and before I knew it I was working at Dazed Digital supporting Susie Bubble!
SG: What' s the best thing about blogging?
KG: The best thing about blogging is knowing that people are enjoying my writing. Even if I get a smile out of one person, or can get one person to think or reflect, then I’ve done my job and I’m happy. As I already mentioned, writing is my passion and blogging is like practice- it’s helping me to one day become more skilled and respected at what I do.
SG: We’re really excited to see your window display for the Chaddy Sportsgirl! How did you feel about being asked to put it together?
KG: When Sportsgirl asked me to do the window I felt a mixture of things- dumbfounded being the most prevalent emotion, eventually giving way to pride and excitement. This is such an amazing opportunity and a super fun collaboration, but sometimes I feel like it’s all too much- I know myself as a clumsy, awkward, geek and it’s a little bit overwhelming to be honored in such a wonderful way!
SG: Describe what you’re doing for your window.
KG: The window is like a private glimpse into the Kat George mind’s eye. It’s a little bit of me on display, much the same way that my blog is. The amazing team at Gloss put the concept together in a tangible way; with my thoughts as a foundation, they’ve extracted a delicate crochet spiderweb from me… quite literally! Expect Kate Bush, me as a giant, tulle pom-poms, and plenty of shoes.
SG: Where did you get your inspiration?
KG: From everywhere- the amazing things around me that make me smile, or think, or just stare for a little while. My ideas were very influenced by my musical icons- those that I’ve grown up with like Kate Bush and David Bowie, to those I’ve taken on as I’ve grown older, like Beyonce and Karen O. It was important for me to incorporate my love of dance, as well as colour- you can’t have too much of either in your life, they bring joy.
