We chat to our style snapper Phil Oh, the man behind Street Peeper, for sneak peek into life as a top street style photographer!
When we needed the most amazing street style from across the world for Go Global, there was only one person to go to: Street Peeper. Snapping stylish lovelies on the streets of London, NYC, Paris, and Sydney (to name a few), Mr Street Peeper, AKA Phil Oh, is a very busy, fashion-loving photographer with an eye for spotting the best looks on the streets of the fash capitals.
Hey Phil! Can you tell us a little bit about how Street Peeper started up?
Phil Oh: I had a lot of free time, and a bit of money, after my novel, "Secrets of the Model Dorm" got published. I was hanging around, going to things like Paris Fashion Week, Art Basel Miami, just to hang out with friends, and I really liked the blog Hel-Looks. So I sort of put two and two together, and started a blog of street-style from all the places I was travelling to.
What’s a day in the life of Mr Street Peeper?
PO: I guess every day is different, but I'll wake up at my leisure, which really is the best part about my life as a blogger... Then spend a couple hours on emails, posting photos, approving comments -- there are some real nasty internet trolls out there who leave the meanest comments -- and also edit/package photos that are requested by print publications and other websites. Maybe chase some invoices for a while, plan some pitches for advertising agencies, shop for airline tickets, and more un-fun stuff like that.
Later in the afternoon, I'll pick up my camera and go wander around my neighborhood (Williamsburg, Brooklyn) or head into Manhattan and look for photos around Soho or the Lower East Side. Stop for a late lunch of steak tartare. Window shop at Seven or Comme des Garcons... And then head home around rush hour. Some days are more stressful than others, but this I guess would be a typical day.
SG: What do you enjoy most about doing what you do?
PO: Travelling, though this is also what I hate most about doing Street Peeper.
SG: What do you look for when choosing a subject to shoot?
PO: Oh, I don’t know really. It's hard to explain. It's really just an "A-HA!" moment.
There must be an art to asking people if you can take their photo!
I usually ask really nicely and with a smile, and try to compliment something of their outfit that is appealing. Not too many people say no, but it happens, and it's hard to not get discouraged but I do alright... People usually love it, or pretend not to love it but secretly do, or actually are really shy about getting their photo taken. I guess I try to read them and adjust accordingly.
Where to from here?
Just keeping on with my site, but I've also just soft-launched a food-blogging software where you can keep track of everything you eat, and see what your friends are. I guess it's for foodies or people trying to eat healthier. It's called Snappetite.
