There’s pretty much one story in the news today and it’s a huge one: Julia Gillard is now Australia’s Prime Minister, the first female PM in Oz history.
Talk about drama. In the last 12 hours, JG formally challenged KRudd for the leadership of the ALP (we heart acronyms! Can you tell?) after months of internal division in the party and a loss of support for Rudd’s leadership.
Hey, hang on a sec, we hear you say, how EXACTLY can a PM be replaced? Didn’t we/ our parents/ the Australian peeps vote for him? Yes, but technically we vote for 150 MPs across the country, and it’s up to the ALP to choose (or lose) their leader.
Gillard was elected unopposed to the Labor leadership this morning, with Rudd stepping down after it became clear that he would lose the leadership ballot. Hard not to feel sorry for him really - he's gone from being one of most loved PMs to being booted. Coming out of the morning’s meeting Gillard said she was “very honoured” and is set to make her first official statement any minute now.
We’ve been following Twitter for all the news – in its usual charming, hilarious style! Cue Marieke Hardy:

So now Australia’s first female Governor-General will swear in our first female PM. Epic. Take it away Tilda Julia!
