We love the UK designer Fred Butler’s originality whether it’s her accessories, art direction or blog. Fred describes her talent as “bringing colour and humour to the fashion world to alleviate the bland and predictable”. And yep, we’ll be following her advice for 2010: “wear more crazy accessories! It opens up positive dialogue with strangers and ultimately brings humanity closer.” Check out our Q&A with the accessories designer.
SPORTSGIRL: HI FRED! TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
FRED BUTLER: I'm an accessories designer who also dabbles in art direction and scribbles via a blog.
SG: AND YOUR TALENT?
FB: Bringing colour and humour to the fashion world to alleviate the bland and predictable, and I wear all one colour to combat the mainstay fashion industry uniform of black attire.
SG: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JEWELLERY STYLE?
FB: Jewellery is my major statement as I'm an accessories designer! I wear a lot of my own designs and retro pieces that are a bit odd and special. I also love gluing a pin badge to random objects to make a fun brooch - like a piano shaped pencil sharpener
SG: WHAT OR WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?
FB: Other jewellers who create wearable art and are fun, colourful characters who live life and art as one complete discourse...Andrew Logan, Judy Blame
SG: WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
To actually make some money?! Ideas don't come for free but unfortunately I’m regularly persuaded to work for no financial gain or simply plagiarised.
WHAT’S YOUR DREAM JOB?
To be invited into a Parisian (couture) atelier to work alongside the team to learn their wealth of knowledge in craft of textile manipulation… embroidery.
SG: FINISH OUR SENTENCES:
MY FAVOURITE DESINGERS ARE…ThreeASFOUR, Alistair Carr (Balenciaga), Michael Van Der Ham, Craig Lawrence, Dean Quinn
I LOVE…Spectrums and rainbows
MY GUILTY SECRET IS…I fall asleep as soon as I sit down on any public transport...the rocking motion lulls me to sleep instantly
SOMETIMES I…stop worryinG. But that quickly freaks me out and I get back to my standard panic mode of constant anxiety
MY TIP FOR THIS YEAR IS TO…wear more crazy accessories! It opens up positive dialogue with strangers and ultimately brings humanity closer in this day and age of incurable hostility.
