Making a giant face made out of junk for Sia is all in a day’s work for the lovely Helen Fitzgerald. The production designer and art director spreads her talent across film, TV, music vids, photos and events, and we were excited to have her lend a hand for the Sportsgirl mag. Check out our Q&A and some of her amazing work!
SPORTSGIRL: HI HELEN! CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
Helen Fitzgerald: I like to create elaborate environments and work with inspiring people.
SG: AND WHAT YOU DO?
HF: I’m a production designer and art director for film, television, music videos, photography and events. I’ve designed a giant face made out of junk for Sia, a dilapidated mansion set for fashion week, stop animated puppets for Beck, a crystallized world for Hercules and love Affair.
SG: WHERE DID YOU START OUT?
HF: I would recruit friends to dress up in costumes and document in specific environments with weird props. I feel like I still do exactly that but now there is an audience! I studied in Perth, Toronto and Sydney doing a BA in design and film and television and a Master of Arts in Production design at the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
SG: WHAT’S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
HF: I like to tell stories by mashing together things that I love or find interesting.
