We heart beauty goodies – and when they're wrapped up in too-cute packaging they make perfect gifts that we just can't resist! We recently had the chance to chat with Matt W. Moore, the artist behind the gorge beauty packaging designs for the Sportsgirl christmas beauty collection.
Summer is time to get playful with make-up - glossy kissable lips, (fake) sun-kissed skin, and eyes that sparkle - that's why we've rounded up the best make-up in the Sportsgirl range to create mini-collections for an all-in-one gorgeousness fix! And to amp up the pretty factor we asked one of our fave artists, the talented Matt W. Moore, to design some equally gorgeous packaging. His geometric designs are as fun, cheeky and bold as summer makeup, and we recently caught with the US-based artist to chat about his impressive creations.
Sportsgirl: Hi Matt! Thanks for your time. Can you tell Sportsgirls a little bit about who you are and where you’re from?
Matt W. Moore: I'm the founder of MWM Graphics, a design and illustration studio based in Portland, Maine. I work across disciplines, from colourful illustrations in my signature “Vectorfunk” style, to freeform watercolour paintings, and massive aerosol murals. I live by the motto “range is conducive to growth” and I feel my greatest work happens when I am required to step out of my comfort zone and look at things from a new angle. When I’m not working on client projects I am busy in my art studio playing and exploring.
SG: How did your connection to Sportsgirl come about?
MWM: The good ladies from Sportsgirl reached out and expressed interest in doing the Artist Series Bundle. I was on board as soon as I read their proposal!
SG: Can you describe the beauty packaging design and what inspired it?
MWM: It is in my signature “Vectorfunk” style. Wild colour combos, asymmetrical geometry, clean sweeping lines and patterns. A fun look for the make-up inside the packages.
SG: You describe your signature style as ‘Vectorfunk’ – can you tell us a little bit about how you developed this distinct style?
MWM: Everything I focused on prior to learning computer programs inspired “Vectorfunk”. Graffiti, doodling, canvas painting, tetris, looking at architecture and nature, funky music breakdowns, and most everything else my eyes and ears get hooked on.
SG: What inspires you to create?
MWM: I feel inspired by almost everything. It’s just a matter of looking at stuff from the right angle, and taking your time.
SG: You create commercial work as well as exhibit in galleries, which I imagine are pretty different…
MWM: At the end of the day, it is all still my vision. I am equally proud and excited for any opportunity that allows me to shine the way I want to :)
SG: What advice would you give to young people who would like to move into the art/ graphic design world?
MWM: Figure out what is uniquely “You”. Make work that doesn’t need a signature. Nurture relationships. Mind your books. And most importantly, have fun!
SG: Where can people find more of your work?
MWM: MWM Graphics Webfolio: http://mwmgraphics.com
