In 1994, New York became the birthplace of the world's first Fashion Week - now there's hardly a corner of the globe that hasn't caught on. We chart the rise of a week of glamour, models, mayhem and lots of fashion, everywhere from Milan to Mongolia!

New York Fashion Week is in full swing for 2009, and with A-listers in the front row, dreamy designs on the catwalks and a jam-packed calendar of parties and launches – it's the perfect mix of fashion industry business and off-the-clock fun. It’s no wonder that fashion lovers and designers around the world have wanted to get in on the action.

Fashion Weeks might be best known in the “Big Four” fashion capitals – New York, Milan, London and Paris – but since the early 2000’s they have sprung up in every far flung corner of the globe. There are now more than 150 fashion weeks (phew!) in the world – meaning it's literally Fashion Week somewhere in the world all year round. In a calender of non-stop fashion, January alone sees Fashion Weeks in Rio, Paris, Milan, Hong Kong, Berlin, Sri Lanka, Antwerp, Rome and Stockholm - each one its own unique flavour.

In 2006, Jakarta's first Islamic Fashion Week showcased ankle-length fashions; Iceland holds shows set in locations as exotic (and impractical?) as the tops of glaciers; Kazakhstan highlights ethnic dress in chic ways.

For those of us unable to jet-set from one exotic locale to another in an endless stream of Fashion Weeks (a Fashion Year…?), why not go around the world in 80 clicks? Okay there aren’t really 80 links, but you get the idea…

Imagine if your job was to go to all the fashion weeks around the world and report on them...it'd be exhausting, but the best job ever!
