Breaking into the fashion industry sure ain't easy! Which is why we've grabbed top tips from one of Australia's hottest stylists, Bex Sheers. Read about how to crack the industry, what it takes to reach the top and how to stay there.
• Sportsgirl: Hey Bex! So how long have you been a stylist now?
• Bex: Professionally and as a career for a little over a year.
• SG: How did you get into the industry?
• Bex: Essentially it found me. Fashion has been my obsession from a really young age, but I guess my start was after running an underground club night in Sydney for a little over two years and meeting many people involved in the fashion industry through that, and it kinda evolved from there.
• SG: What has been your most most memorable moment so far?
• Bex: Having AAA to my first New York Fashion Week in 2007 was pretty memorable, particularly the Marc Jacobs show and seeing all my fave supers in the flesh was a highlight!! My first cover was a pretty special moment too!
• SG: What do you love best about your job?
• Bex: Travelling and meeting new people. Being inspired to constantly push boundaries and create a fantasy world through images. The oppurtunity to put forward my opinion to a wider audience, and working with incredibly talented image makers, collaboratively working toward that ultimate fashion moment.
• SG: At Sportsgirl we've just launched our comp to find a superstylist, what's your number one tip for stylist hopefuls?
•Bex: Effortlessness, intuition and attitude is key! Don't follow trends blindly, take what you love and make it your own. Break all the rules and do it whole-heartedly. All fashion is a suggestion, its the person wearing the clothes that makes them interesting.
• SG: As a superstylist, what do you think it takes to get to the top?
• Bex: Patience, ambition, commitment and a good editing eye. The ability to inspire and make people dream. Plus a strong point of view (and point of difference) and the ability to translate it. Networking and a no-fear attitude helps.
