It doesn’t get much more glamorous than Nicholas Morley - we recently had the chance to chat with the Aussie designer about his new collection for Sportsgirl, fashion, sequins and skulls.
This guy has serious design cred - he started the label Buddhist Punk which made totally terrific t-shirts for the likes of the Rolling Stones, he dresses the stars, and had a hit New York show with Lizzy Jagger in tow and a runway flanked by music and fashion industry glitterati. He's inspired by rock and punk, parties and the beach, and we're totally psyched that he’s created a 12-piece collection for Sportgirl!
He has come up with a cult collection of wardrobe wonders for the Sportsgirls Like collection, featuring skull singlets, animal-print dresses and darkly delicious charm bracelets. This is a collection where cool kudos is high and the 80s reign supreme. Thanks to Saint Nick, it feels like all our Christmases have come at once!
• Sportsgirl: What drew you to fashion?
• Nicholas Morley: I was a hairdresser working out of New York, doing magazine shoots and fashion shows so I have always been around fashion designers and models.
• SG: What is your advice to others in the industry?
• NM: Don't follow trends, set your own; try your hardest to make good quality garments, and make sure you have someone in your business that understands money.
• SG: What’s the inspiration behind Nicholas X Morley?
• NM: I am inspired by what's going on in my life at the time; right now I'm surfing and listening to good tunes, so I would say the beach, surfing culture and music.
• SG: What is it about sequins and skulls?
• NM: Sequins are a great way to light up a garment and the Balinese (where I work) are great at sewing them on; skulls never die! To me a skull represents the fact that at the end of the day we all look the same.
• SG: We're super psyched about the Sportsgirl collection you've put together. Can you tell Sportsgirls how the collaboration came about?
• NM: We got together to see what would work, I was impressed by what Sportsgirl wanted and they have let me have complete design control over the range.
• SG: Can you describe the collection?
• NM: There are a few party dresses that will turn heads, a few tees to make you smile and a good take on my jewellery that I've been designing for a few years.
• SG: Have you ever used fashion as a platform to deliver a wider message?
• NM: Yes, I made a tee for the free tibet movement whilst at Buddhist Punk donating all profits and for the free Burma cause, and a few other political and social comments along the way.
You can get your hands on Nicholas Morley's hot bustier party dreses, jewellery, bags and slogan tees in seleted stores and online now!
