We go beneath the surface to profile some of the fashion jobs that many people haven't heard of!
In an industry like fashion it's easy to get caught up in the glamour of its high profile poster-children: the models, designers and editors whose pics, scandals and personalities dominate the pages of glossies and TV screens. But for every Anna Wintour, Kate Moss or Stella McCartney there is a less well-known fashion lover doing a job that keeps that well-oiled style machine going.
What they do: We've all seen the magic that happens on runways - fashion show producers are the crazily efficient people who make it all look so glam and effortless.
They're responsible for the production of the show from start to finish - working closely with designers, coordinating models, organising venues and staging, getting the right lighting and music. They also get their hands dirty with the admin side, organising the budget, schedule, media coverage, audience seating and invitations. Phew!
Want this job? You'd better like: staying flat-out busy, getting majorly organised, networking, fashion and design, and planning, planning, planning.
What they do: Creating new designs on paper is one thing - but making then look good on a person is something else!
That's where fit models come in. They're the people who try on sample designs for clothing manufacturers and designers, and walk, sit, stretch and bend in the potential new best-seller to make sure it looks and feels great. Fit models need to have specific measurements - but these differ from designer to designer - meaning there is room for models of all shapes and sizes.
Want this job? You'd better like: getting changed quickly in front of a design team, being looked at, giving an objective opinion on the look/feel/fit of clothing.
What they do: Yes, you can shop with someone else’s money, and get paid to do it! Fashion buyers source clothing lines for retail chains and boutiques - staying ahead of the fashion pack by predicting what items will fly off the racks!
But before you shout “sign me up now!" there’s a lot more to being a successful fashion buyer. As well as travelling, attending fashion shows and following the fashion media up to the minute, buyers need to be a whiz at admin: budgeting, data entry, dealing with suppliers and company bigwigs are all in a day’s work. Then there's the pressure of choosing items that sell.
Want this job? You'd better have: great business sense, analytical skills and a sixth-sense when it comes to predicting upcoming trends and what consumers are going to want to wear a season ahead.
