Speak Up! Who Are Your Modern Day Revolutionaries?

There's nothing quite like a good revolution. Not the mobs-of-French-people-branding-weapons-in-a-desperate-bid-to-overthrow-an-autocratic-monarchy variety.

The nicer kind. The kind that involves creative weapons rather than burning sticks and violent hordes. Though no one does a revolution quite like the French, you’ve got to admire their resolve ... hmmm okay I seem to be getting off topic here.

Extreme circumstances demand extreme reactions, which may or may not be in mob form. But in our society, Gen Ys, Xs & Zs are looking to revolutionaries who are as creative as they are political. The new breed of rebel wraps up revolutionary sentiments in dance-floor friendly tunes, street art or beautiful words. It’s smart, not to mention fulfilling, to use your personal creative energies and talents to get your message out there, and to do it in a medium that will reach the largest amount of like-minded people. Enter the revolutionaries of our generation: people like UK/ Sri Lankan songstress MIA whose original sounds and kaleidoscopic style reflects a political stance that takes no prisoners. Or UK street artist Banksy whose in-demand guerilla graf tackles politics, consumerism and culture. Or even Australia's own (and Sportsgirl collaborator) Romance Was Born whose limitless creativity is turning the Fashion industry on its head.

Not happy to go with the status-quo flow, these are the kinds of creative, pop-culture, talented revolutionaries who are speaking up for what they believe in.

So what can you do? Well why don't you start by Speaking Up what creative revolutionaries are getting you inspired to make change? Submit your own articles for a chance to be published on the new Sportsgirl blog.

My all time favorite people forging the way on the digital front are the NYC based team PFSK. They also filter in all the creative juices flowing from around the world into your inbox, pretty much daily, and just produced an awesome book of all the Brooklyn 'revolutionaries' http://www.psfk.com/2009/06/new-from-psfk-psfk-snapshot-brooklyn.html

I think a revolutionary can be someone who knows what not to let slip by and stay in the past. I love that Dita Von Teese has seemingly single handedly brough back the retro burlesque look back for a new generation to enjoy. She claims to be a very ordinary plain looking person but what she does for plain is what lace did for underwear.

To me, a revolutionary is someone who breaks moulds and stereotypes, defies criticism and negativity, and succeeds through utter determination. Examples are J.K. Rowling, a struggling single mother attempting to write to earn a living, knocked back by twelve publishing houses, and is now worth nearly $800 million. Or Kurt Fearnley, who was born with lumbosacral agenesis and also been seriously injured car accident. Despite all this he has won gold medals in the Paralympics, and has one of the best senses of humour I've ever seen. I have so much respect for people who do great things regardless of the terrible circumstances they have little or no control over :)

Nylon magazine, baby! standing out from the crowd is their job, but inspiring everyone else to do so is their passion. i travel 60km either way to the nearest stockist of this magazine, i just can't get enough! They show the latest designs off the catwalk, the greatest trends popping up, then they mix them to amazing results, bringing us style i have yet to find anywhere else; trendy & fun but individual and oh-so-inspiring.

I think that the impact of some of the greatest revolutionaries are not given the recognition they deserve until after their influenced has past. I do feel connected to some kind of youth movement as part of generation Y but I think it will be a very long time until I am far away enough for this point in my life to analyse who and what’s triggering this change of thought. I guess that’s where the other generations come in, they seem to be very good at criticizing us so then at the very least I will be able to see how we do things differently from how they have been done in the past.

i think everyone is contributing to the revolution of a changing world at the moment. people are no longer as worried to speak out about their beliefs and values. i think artists like pink are great for standing up for what they believe in. the new sub culture of pop stars rising to fame at the moment are doing the world a lot of justice i believe.. no longer is it cool to go out get trashed and take drugs.. sure go out have a few drinks with friends and b sociable, but these new stars and artists are standing up for their beliefs.. NO getting trashed, NO drugs, NO sex before marriage.. we used to reject people for talking this way but recently the younger celebrities have started to change our ways of thinking.. it is probably too late for my generation but i think its a great start for the youngesters of 2day

i think something that is revolutionary is how peoples perspective is changing. espesh in the fashion industry. like although its still tough and all you see that companies are starting to hire girls with curves and figures rather then the anorexic people who put teenagers down because of how skinny they are. i think tyra banks is really going by this by having a plus size model win a cycle of ANTM and having themes like childhood games because us teenagers are 'growing up to fast' it is becoming a revolution that we are being less sterotypical with having to be super skinny and super pretty and all that. its more now that you are who you are and people are begining to love people for who they are :)

It really depends on the individual doesn't it. Some one could be revolutionary just by following a trend, and therefore putting that hot look down in the pages of history. Whereas there is the opposite to keep in mind too where a revolutionary look can be something unusual or different from the social norm at the time! =P
